Resumen

The author discusses a renewal within the science of history through its adoption of methods taken from other disciplin es, achieving a fruitful dialogue between them and philosophy and humanism, which was very well exemplified in the works of the Chilean historian Eugenio Pereira Salas, who managed to link human happenings with the nature of things and of customs, thus revealing the historic-simbolical meaning of acts across time. Concerning this humanistic conception of history, he specifically mentions the consequences of the discovery of the New World made by Columbus, and how, after a period of five hundred years of divorce between humanism and the interpretation of America, history begins to rencounter it.

Rolando Mellafe, Universidad de Chile

Profesor del Departamento de Ciencias Históricas de la Facultad de Filosofía, Humanidades y Educación de la Universidad de Chile y Director de su revista, que tiene por título CuADERNOs DE HISTORIA. Miembro del Subcomité de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales del Servicio de Desarrollo Científico, Artístico y de Cooperación Internacional de la mencionada Universidad. Se ha ocupado eminentemente de la Historia Económica y de la Social. Entre sus obras se hallan LA INTRODUCCIÓN DE LA EsCLAviTUD NEGRA EN CHILE, TRÁFico Y RuTAs y LA HisTORIOGRAFÍA DE HoY, la segunda, publicada en el primer número de eista revista.
