Abstract

In spite of the claims that have been made about Spanish in general in almost all the bibliography, recent studies have proven that a labiodental allophone of /b/ can be found in Chilean Spanish rather frequently. In order to determine whether there is an influence of writing and literacy in the use of [v], and if it is either a natural or stilted allophone of [b], a corpus of oral production of /b/ of 10 subjects of both sexes between 12 and 14 years was elicited. The participants read a list of words and participated in a semi-directed conversation. It was demonstrated that there is no relation between the grapheme and its pronunciation. This is, that independent of the word spelling (v or b), most of the subjects elicited the labiodental consonant [v], which is the most frequent allophone of /b/ in both groups, regardless of the performed task.
