Abstract

The present paper was written within the context of a postgraduate class on Social Gerontology, which is given at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile –Old Age and Ageing Program, Multidisciplinary Approaches. This contribution analyzes the different aspects that should be considered when creating and/or adapting spaces for the elderly people. Different guidelines are suggested in relation to the provision of public services; the design and illumination of dwellings; accident, theft, pest and fire prevention and action plans in the event of earthquakes. This paper also highlights the importance of the sense of belonging, privacy, enjoyment and autonomy for those living in these spaces and the cost of the provision of such a service.
