Abstract

The Chilean economy experienced a real debacle, a disaster with enormous social consequences in 1981-1982. The article describes its causes, dynamism and effects. It explains that all this was foreseeable for the military government and its civilian economists by 1981; that the causes of the crisis were deliberately introduced by the public authorities; that the crisis was allowed to grow to the level that it reached in order to ensure the economic system of fierce neoliberalism, which began in 1974, and that the lack in the legislation of appropriate crimes to punish the criminal behaviors that occurred before and during the crisis, was not and still is not at all a coincidence.
