Abstract

The objective of the present study was to identify the understanding of the healthcare staff of a general hospital about the work of Occupational Therapists. This is qualitative and quantitative study, through documentary analysis. The sample consisted of 30 requests for consultation for the Occupational Therapy Service and the respective assessments contained in the medical records in response to them. The reasons for the request were analyzed and correlated with the evaluation of the Occupational Therapist. Only therequests for consultation of the units in the Adult and Elderly Health Care Program of the Multiprofessional Residency were considered. The project followed all the ethical procedures. The Medical Clinic was the unit that most requested consultations. There were none from the Urology and Nephrology and Head and Neck units. Physiotherapy and Psychology were the professions that most requested consultations, possibly due to their greater proximity to occupational therapists. The analysis of the requests of consultations made it possible to classify them into categories, being "Functions and structure of the body” and"Daily Life Activities"the most prevalent. It was concluded that the healthcare staff, in general, has adequate understanding about the work developed by occupational therapists. The reasons listed in the majority of the requests for consultation corresponded to the demands identified in the initial evaluation. There is also a need for continued education and awareness among professionals and students, considering that this hospital is a teaching space, and that the teams of academics, residents and contracted professionals are constantly renewed.
